This month i would like to recommend to you the latest of the quality-wise very reliable compilation series of A Bugged Out - this time executed by Hot Chip. Known for their stunning live gigs and especially their 3rd album ‘The Warning’ (including the killer party tune ‘Over And Over’) the grammy-nominated british electro-pop combo delivers a kickin’ party mix from the start to the end. Expect a crossover from artists of which you probably didn’t think they would ever be part of a mix. This is a trademark collection of what Hot Chip as a band stand for!
Late….Late…Late. Though i probably had more time than ever before - May has been a bit of a surprising month - it nearly didn’t make it. But does it really matter when in May? What can i say? I’ve only seen and heard Damian Lazarus play as a DJ on several occasions at the old TBar in London and of course checked out a few of his compilations such as Sci-Fi-Lo-Fi. As the label owner of Crosstown Rebels he has been an influential force in the dance music industry for years but was yet to produce an album….until today. Smoke The Monster Out is an amazing masterpiece of electronic music that perfectly reflects the obvious skills of Mr. Lazarus. Whether it be techy, deep or even melancholic songwriting the album delivers a full on artist spektrum away from what you expect to be a DJ’s album and deserves a lot of credit. Outstanding tunes are “Neverending”, a midtempo disco-ish floorfiller or the beautiful “Diamond In The Dark”. Go and get it!
As the weather is so brilliant over Easter only a quick mention of the brand new April mix. A few old and new gems put together with a bit of an indie-electro touch every now and then. I think i found the cure. Nuff said. Finally the mixes keep rollin’ on a regular basis and i find the time to check a lot of new and especially old tunes. Have been digging through Discogs the last few months to check for old dance tunes i heard in other mixes and was pretty successful. There are not yet in the following mix, but keep your ears open during the next few months to receive a few real classic gems you and i probably haven’t even heard before - to be fair i don’t think there will ever be an end to this (unless the bank puts an end to it). To many good tunes out there to be found! Anyway, the new march edition means more props to the likes of Aeroplane, Tensnake, Crazy P and others for their amazing latest work. Wow. I am amazed. I was able to get the new mix ready in the middle of the current month? Seems like i could hold on to my promise to deliver 12 mixes this year. To be continued! I am still archiving my vinyl and have no idea where it leads to, but sometimes i am just lost on the search for an old tune. Mixmag had a poll lately between the top dj’s of the world to state what makes a good one and most of them said “know your tunes inside out”. With the rising amount of tunes - either on vinyl or even more difficult to remember on mp3 - it is so hard to keep’em all in mind, so the solution for the easiest-to-find-archive is yet to be found! Right in time i managed to finish the so important last mix of the year with a bunch of tunes i really liked in 2008, mainly from the likes and styles of acts like Aeroplane, Reverso 68, Holy Ghost! and other who re-defined electronic disco music in a way we haven’t seen for a while. It may act as a proof that can surely dance to beats not faster than 120 bpm. One for the last 101 mins of this year - it is worth to wait for the last tune, but you may form your own opinion after listening to it. It finals a year with lots of changes, surprises, disappointments, joy and successes. One of my new year’s resolutions for 2009 (one i can hopefully stick to) will be to deliver a mix every month of the coming year. Damn. I always try to time the new mix earlier in the month, but it just doesn’t work for various reasons. One is that i somehow still haven’t worked out how to record with my digital systems without a bloody feedback noise in the background, which means i make another classic return to the one and only vinyl with this new mix. While the word ‘deep’ is used pretty much in every tracklist i read these days without including any proper deep house tune, i have tried to put down my interpretation of a fresh deep house mix - without lacking the soulfulness and melody a good mix needs as well. As this only reflects my opinion it is up to you to judge the mix in the most honest way by leaving feedback right here in the blog.
